Whether you are training for a race, looking for a way to manage stress or anxiety, or suffer from chronic pain, therapeutic massage can help.
My approach to massage therapy is rooted in the powerful benefits of relaxation. It works like this: when you're in a calm and peaceful state, the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest") is activated and the sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight") becomes disengaged. Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system encourages the body to heal itself and function more efficiently...and will yield better results from massage therapy.
Chronic activation of sympathetic nervous system has become a sort of baseline, or normal state, for many people. This is called the stress response. One way to combat the stress response is to do more things to engage the parasympathetic nervous system. Things like massage. Relaxation is oh so powerful!
