My approach to massage therapy is rooted in the powerful benefits of deep relaxation.  When you're in a calm and peaceful state, the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest") is activated and the sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight") becomes more and more disengaged.  Chronic activation of "fight or flight", known as the stress response, has become a sort of baseline or normal state for many people.  One way to combat the stress response is to do more things to engage the parasympathetic nervous system.  Things like massage.  The more you are able to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, the more the body will be able to maximize its healing potential and function more efficiently.  Relaxation is oh so powerful!
